Rethinking such an iconic waterfront involved designing a continuous urban element capable of structuring the promenade, complementing the play and relaxation areas, and offering multiple ways to sit, rest, or socialize. The challenge was to create a unique and adaptable form that would blend seamlessly with the site’s organic lines without driving up manufacturing costs.
Metalco and its partner Treddy met this challenge with a 35-meter monolithic bench created using 3D-printed concrete. Unlike traditional street furniture composed of repetitive elements, each section features its own geometry, high or low backrests, varied seating, and informal resting areas, all within a fluid line that follows the pedestrian path. This technology eliminated the need to manufacture about fifteen different molds, significantly reduced costs and lead times, and accelerated the project’s implementation. Beyond the technical feat, the bench has become a true urban landmark that fosters social interaction, welcomes families, tourists, and residents alike, and reinforces the identity of the waterfront.
