On March 20th, 2018, the city of Ouargla inaugurated the first line of its tramway system, comprising 16 stations, each equipped with two shelters and dedicated urban furniture. Located at the gateway to the Sahara Desert, Ouargla became the fifth city in Algeria to adopt a tramway system. The project addressed a key user challenge: providing protected, comfortable waiting areas adapted to extreme climatic conditions, while sustainably structuring urban mobility.
Our approach
Metalco supports the user experience by supplying 32 tailor-made shelters and associated furniture (totems, barriers and litter bins), industrialized by the Metalco1984 division. Painted steel structures, laser-decorated stainless-steel panels with Moucharabieh motifs, and red cedar wood seating provide protection, comfort and a strong cultural identity. A solution combining functionality, durability and quality of use, transforming each station into a clear, welcoming and sustainable space for everyday passengers.
